Imagine a congressperson spend more time at home

Congress doesn't need just another Congressperson who bends with the wind for cash and party politics, it needs a gadfly, a true pain in the ass.Me. I'm 78 years old, proven Big idea man, quick-witted, intelligent, cranky as hell and I have Big Ideas to make this country work like a rented mule.Your 45th district Congressman - unless it's me - ain't gonna make them happen. That would require monumental leadership and a superb knack of bringing warring factions together. As for leadership, I…See More

Give us plain folks back the home field advantage!

FLASH UPDATE:

Let Members of Congress vote on legislation from their home district offices!

PPC member Ralph Benko was on CSPAN's Washington Journal for half an hour last Sunday to talk about this initiative!

Are we witnessing the birth of a newly engaged citizenry?

What started a few days ago as an op-ed is gaining momentum. It's simply a call to our legislators to allow themselves to vote from their home district offices so that you, and not the lobbyists, have more access to them!

A series of editorials is appearing around the country, beginning in The Washington Examiner, and including TechPresident.org, The Hawaiian Reporter, and The Baltimore Sun.

The idea calls for our Representatives and Senators to amend their standing rule and allow themselves to vote on legislation from their district office. More time in their home district means less in D.C. This would make it a lot harder, and more expensive, for the lobbyists to smooth talk them and for party leadership to twist their arms. At home, they would be much more in touch with the people they represent. Meaning... us.

Such a rule change wouldn't require Moses parting the Red Sea. The Constitution permits it. No legislation needs to be passed. It's just amending Rule XX.

Like the idea? Join up, join the conversation here in this community, and invite friends who are tired of the special interests having more access to our lawmakers than the people.

Give us plain folks back the home court advantage!

Nevada News And Views Covers the call to repeal Rule XX and send Congress Home

At home, they would be much more in touch with the people who they represent. With much less wear and tear.

Of course, they would still come in to “the office” to confer with one another whenever useful, attend major ceremonial occasions and committee meetings when important issues are genuinely at stake, hear out the lobbyists, raise money, get on TV, even play poker or attend prayer breakfasts with their colleagues. This would tip a balance. Right now, it’s easy for the…

Congress Come Home- a new idea? Read this 1992 article from Christopher Manion

Congress, Come Home

By Christopher Manion

WALL STREET JOURNAL 07-14-1992

The next time you see your congressman, ask him where he and his family live. Most likely he'll say ` Washington ,' and that answer explains the dismal condition of Congress as it lurches, panic-stricken, toward elections this fall.

To most representatives, `reform' has meant using every dodge to perpetuate themselves using taxpayer money, and to plan retirements designed to maximize…
